Rolex ref 6305-1 18k Rosegold Datejust Ovettone

The ref 6305 is an interesting watch as it has the hybrid feel of the Rolex Bubbleback and Datejust. This is an early Rolex Datejust ref 6305-1 Datejust Ovettone (known by their Italian nickname Ovettone (big egg) due to the exceptional depth of case) from the year 1953 using the early A296 semi bubbleback movement in my favourite 18k rose gold. Despite it having the semi bubbleback movement, the watch is highly accurate for its age....

Jan - Mar 2022, Q1 Review

For the year 2022, I hope to stay more focus and also follows some thematic in my series collection but somehow, my collection has become too wise again. I have continue my collection with the Exotic watches such as the Amida Digitrend, North Korean, China watches plus continue my finetuning of my Rolex Datejust series. In addition, I have also managed to find a nice Omega ref 3944 Square Moonphase watch from Portugal.

Omega ref 3944 Cosmic Square Moonphase watch

The Omega Cosmic Moonphase watch was originally introduced to the market in 1947. It was Omega's first watch featuring a full calendar combined with moon phases. The shape started with a round one and eventually evolved to the square one. The ref. 3944 is the last Cosmic for Omega and it is perhaps the rarest version of the Cosmic line.

The ref 3944 featured  an oversized 32.5x36mm case with elaborate fancy lugs. It used caliber 381 and it was produced in 14k yellow gold for the American market and 18k yellow gold for the European markets, and in Rose Gold which is the rarest of the three metals produced.

I used to own one Omega cosmic squre moonphase during the late 1990s. For some reasons, I have traded it away, a decision that I have regretted. After much searching, I have finally managed to get one back after more than 20 years.

Amida Digitrend 1970s

The Amida Digitrend was introduced in 1976 during Basel show. We need to remember that during the 1970s, the Japanese have managed to capture huge market share with their LED watches, and these were the hottest deals on the market. 

To compete with brands like Girard-Perregaux and Bulova and to offer a budget solution, Amida released the Digitrend watch. The Amidas, like the GPs or the Bulovas, were not only aesthetically cool timepieces, they were also driver watches. A driver watch is a timepiece you can wear and check the time while holding onto the steering wheel of your car without turning your wrist. It displays the time on the side of the watch rather on the top making it visible for the driver at all times.

I have been on a look out for this 1970s watch for a while. There were two watches I was looking for namely the Wittnauer Futurama Double Retrograde Flyback, which I have managed to find last August 2021 and the Amida Digitrend. I have finally managed to find a Amida Digitrend from Germany yesterday. 

MB&F released their 5th horological machine the HM 5 several years ago and from the design perspective, the inspiration clearly came from these 1970’s drive watches.

Patek Philippe Ref 3919

I was doing much research between two Patek previously. My last Patek watch was in 2011. This 3919 is one that has the full DNA of the modern Patek Calavatra. Even though it’s only 33.5mm, the watch will look much bigger on the wrist owing to the bezel and all white dial. It’s one of those classic dress watch that looks good in any work or gala dinner events.

Patek 3445 white gold with date

With the help of Candy, I have managed to find a Patek Philippe White gold 3445 with date in very good condition. The 3445 was produced from 1961-1981 in solid yellow and white gold. Since I already have the 2552 and 3433 in yellow gold, it become natural for me wanting to find a white gold. The simple design is really timeless and nice. This is the second auto movement produced by Patek and is also one of the most beautiful rotor Patek ever built.

History of famous company Patek Philippe began 160 years back, in 1839, when to Geneva officer of the Polish cavalry Antoni Norbert Patek arrived Philip de Pravdzhich, taking part in a revolt during occupation of Bel'vederskogo of palace in Warsaw. Since it was cruelly low-spirited, Patek Philip, as well as thousands of other Poland, rescued from pursuit, was forced to abandon Motherland.
