I have started my vintage watch collection with a simple Rolex Royal and Speed king and Bubbleback during the late 1988.
The simple Rolex Oyster Perpetual is truly the genesis for the entire Rolex brand. The very first Rolex models were called ‘Oysters’ which was owed to their innovative three part case that all screwed into each-other.
The piece above is simply called Rolex Oyster Royal . The watch is a of those early watches, utilizing a water-resistant Oyster case, a manually-wound movement. However, it comes with a great variety of dial designs.
As mentioned, even though it is a No frills — purely a functional timekeeping device. Dating to circa 1953, and contrary to our prior comment about being a "no frills" watch, it does possess a beautiful design silver dial within its 34mm case.
Coming in at 34mm in diameter, the stainless steel case comes to us in fantastic, possibly unpolished condition, and shows normal signs of wear with no damage of note. The dial, however, is the real treat with this piece. It features a nice design of waves like rings on the dial markers. The indices and coronet at the 12 o'clock position are all rended in gold-tone.
Despite being ‘entry-level’ these offer a ton of character and remain an overlooked part of the important history of Rolex on their journey to the powerhouse brand that they are today. This is nothing short of a delightful vintage piece that can be worn every single day, on any occasion, and on virtually any wrist.
The 34mm Rolex models are chronically slept on and present great value next to its more well-known siblings, while truly embodying the essence of Rolex.
