I have started my vintage watch collection with a simple Rolex Royal and Rolex Speedking and Rolex Bubbleback during the late 1988.
The simple Rolex Oyster ref 6282 serial 9734xxx, is from 1953 and it is truly the genesis for the entire Rolex brand. The very first Rolex models were called ‘Oysters’ from the 1920s which was owed to their innovative three part case that all screwed into each-other.
The piece above is simply called Rolex Oyster Royal . The watch is a of those early watches, utilizing a water-resistant Oyster case, a manually-wound movement. However, it comes with a great variety of dial designs.
As mentioned, even though it is a No frills — purely a functional timekeeping device. Dating to circa 1953, it does possess a beautiful design dial within its 34mm case. This stainless steel case is possibly unpolished condition, and shows normal signs of wear with no damage of note. The dial, however, is the real treat with this piece. It features a nice design of waves like rings on the dial markers. The indices and coronet at the 12 o'clock position are all rended in gold-tone. The most expensive dial for this model is one with the stars markers. It also has the honey combed waffle dial, embossed Rolex crown dial.
Despite being ‘entry-level’ these offer a ton of character and remain an overlooked part of the important history of Rolex on their journey to the powerhouse brand that they are today. This is nothing short of a delightful vintage piece that can be worn every single day, on any occasion, and on virtually any wrist.
Caliber 710
Once in a long while, a watch with nice dial, case, and movements comes alomg the way. The 34mm Rolex models are present great value next to its more well-known siblings, while truly embodying the essence of Rolex.
