Hongqi is a really significant piece in any vintage Chinese mechanical collection, even in China. As far as the SL-2 goes, the WIKI Liaoning entry notes: "the SL-2 movement built on imported Swiss tooling", and "These earlier HongQi watches enjoyed an excellent reputation and continue to be sought after by collectors.

From the information from watch forum, among China made watches, there are some with "shizhi" on the dials, and the first of them are those 18 watches of Shanghai's first batch prototypes. One of them was sold for RMB 111000.00 on the 40th anniversary of Shanghai Watch Factory on Sept.24th, 1996. The rest 17 watches had never surfaced since then. So compared to Shanghai's prototypes, Hongqi shizhi watches are lucky as they were buried in Vintage Chinese watches piles in the 1990's and was picked up and preserved by collectors. A conservetive estimate would be about 10 watches but the upper limit is hard to tell. However, since they are called shizhi(prototypes), the number should be much less than any volume production model watches. They are precious collectables.

There are 4 ways to tell a Hongqi prototype: 

1. the brand name is shizhi and this is unique among Vintage Chinese mechanical watches  

2. a blank case back. 

3. an in-house movement

4. there many versions of dials and marker designs and are the same as that of production models. And that is why they are called Hongqi Shizhi watches, but not prototypes.

Even for the early prototypes, there are two versions namely the very early lacquered white dial version and the later silver dial version.
