There were several watches Rolex produced
specifically for the Commonwealth nations. The reference 2280 manual wind watch
has many names such as the Speedking, Royalite, Royal and Oyster Majestic etc.
It has two versions with the early one with subsidiary seconds and the later
one with sweeping seconds. The hand wind early Rolex from the 1940s-50s-60s are
very reliable watch and many are still in perfect working conditions till
today. These were the pre Rolex reference 6694.
The design elements from the case to the dial are reminiscent of the Rolex Bubbleback designs that were common in the 1940s, with Mercedes hands and the desirable black dial.. There is a yellow 60 seconds at the edge of the dial scale. The crown has the "Rolex Oyster". It has a size of 30mm, small by today's standard but is comfortable size to wear. This watch is from 1942. It is 78 years old this year!
I am in the process of tightening my watch collection and I have promised myself to maintain the number of watches as well. As such, I have traded my Titus Calypsomatic for this beauty.
By the way, Actor Marlon Brando was born in 1924, and received his first Rolex in 1943, at age 19 from his parents. It was a Rolex Oyster Royalite Observatory model similar size of the Rolex Oyster Majestic.
The.Rolex Majestic even though is a small watch 30mm, it has a relatively large winding crown which made it easy for winding and adjustment of time.
