The Rolex Prince used a
movement by Hermann Aegler. It was a rectangular shaped movement, which had its
winding barrel at one end and a large balance at the other end. This
theoretically allowed a larger barrel, which in turn allowed a longer
mainspring – and therefore longer autonomy (reportedly 58 hours).
Of the
various Rolex Prince, there is a King among the Prince: The Rolex Prince Jump
Hour watch: the world's first digital design. Carving out an aperture to
display each hour that passes, this capsule vintage was known as the 'doctor's
watch' for its ability to capture time down to the second; perfect for pulse
taking.
I have waited 32 years for this Rolex Prince Jump hour. I first saw the
Rolex Prince Jump hour in 1988 in a vintage watch shop "Good Old
Days" at Lucky Plaza. As I was still in University at that time, that watch
was not one that I can afford.
Almost all the vintage Watch shops in Lucky Plaza are
closed now: Good Old Days, Antique Watch corner, Hudson Watch, Kinghouse. only
Eddie Antique is left, but I heard he is focusing on Chinese antiques now, Even
in Hong Kong, the number of vintage watch shops have been diminishing as well.
I have put in much efforts to hunt for one since then. During the years, I have managed to find two Jump hour by Gruen but the Rolex Jump Hour is the King among the Prince. I have almost found one Rolex jump hour in 2016 (see photo below) when I was stationed in Thailand. However, the seller refused to sell despite the fact that I have won the auction.
Nevertheless, today is a happy day as I have finally found one Rolex Prince Jump hour in original dial and with the original box. To follow my minimum "one in one out policy", I have let go the IWC Yacht club and a Rolex ref 1008 white dial for this baby. According to Gary, the watch was purchased from the first owner from India. Thanks
The watch comes with the original Rolex patent winding crown
At the side bars, there are solid gold hallmarks
