Breguet Type XX from Hodinkee

There is an interesting article from Hodinkee that talks about the vintage Breguet type XX. For me, the Breguet type XX is a severely under value chronograph watch as it is much rarer than the Rolex Daytona. Moreover, many of these were made for the French Pilot. Given the high brand positioning of Breguet versus Rolex, the prices of these vintage Type XX chronographs are very cheap now. Look at the number of vintage Rolex Daytona in the market versus the Breguet Type XX as the latter is for the real connoisseur who knows the history behind the watch.

The Type 20 is the proof that Breguet offers more than elegant dress watches with guilloche dials. Jack went all in with the modern edition here, but here you see a transitional version offered after the original 38 mm chosen by the French army in the 1950s. Indeed, Breguet released it after the luxury house Chaumet had taken control of the brand in 1970. On that occasion, the Type 20 got a larger 40 mm compressor case and a sleek black bezel. This version existed in both two and three-register layouts, with, respectively, the caliber Valjoux 235 and 725, both offering the flyback function that the original military contract stipulated. Note that this version never made it into the French Armed Forces, as its cost was judged excessive at the time. Finally, in 1995 Breguet released the current version of this chronograph, named Type XX instead of the original Type 20 borne out of the eponymous military specs. I wish this listing had a better picture, but nonetheless it seems the lume dot has disappeared from the bezel.

This Type 20 from the 1970s can be found for 13,000 Euros (or around $14,500) on a French forum here; it comes with the two last service invoices from Breguet, the last one dating only from a few months ago.

Breguet Type XX

From the military Pilot watch point of view, the Type XX occupies an importance part of aviation history. There are a few manufacturers of Type XX and most Type XX watches share a lot of obvious similarities. They are black dialed chronographs, with luminous hands (most were using radioactive radium) and Arabic numbers. They house manual wind flyback movements, their diameter is in the 37 to 39 mm range, and they are equipped with a bi-directional rotating bezel.

From the internet, the specification of the type XX includes:
  • a black dial, with two registers at 3 and 9 o'clock able to count up to 30 minutes;
  • a diameter of approximately 38 mm;
  • the flyback function;
  • a watch accurate to at least 8 seconds per day
  • a power reserve of at least 35 hours;
  • the ability to operate satisfactorily at least 300 times.
Breguet was commissioned to produce 2,000 “Type 20” chronographs by government contract in 1954. On the visible face of the caseback is generally engraved BREGUET / TYPE 20 / 5101/54, where the last 2 numbers are the contract number and the year (in 2-digit form).

I am not an expert in Chronograph watches as my focus were mainly the Rolex bubbleback, Princes at that time. I was fortunate to find a Breguet Type XX many years ago by swapping watches with another collector. The reason for my collection of Breguet was because I was working for the Swatch Group at that time and I was keen to collect some of Swatch group's brands (Breguet, Omega, Longines etc).

In addition, there is the second generation Breguet with three register. Although the very first military Breguet Type 20 did not have any brand on the dial, the later second generation civilian versions (with either 2 or 3 registers) did sport the Breguet logo. This is my second generation three registers chronograph with bekelite bezel.

1950s Breguet Type XX by Hodinkee

There is another nice article on Type XX by Hodinkee,,..

There are Type XX's and then there are watches that dealers call type XX's.  This, friends, is a legitimate and seemingly original Type XX from Breguet.  It went into service in 1954, was sent into service a handful of times, and then decommissioned in 1980, all of which you can tell by the caseback engravings.  This watch has an original UNSIGNED dial (as it should be), true to form onion crown, and a case in nice clean shape.  The folks at Classic Watch are asking about $14k for it, which considering how many crappy wanna-be Type XX's sell for the same range, isn't too bad (we think, but again, onus is completely on you to do your research).  (Original Listing)

Breguet Type XX Civilian Aeronavale by Hondinkee

Breguet Type XX Civilian Aeronavale
This is just a beautiful example of a Breguet Type XX in the 1960 Aeronavale style, but without the military engravings on the caseback, suggesting it was meant for sale to civilians. This particular example appears very nice and unpolished. Man, I love this watch. It is available from Time Titans for a Buy It Now of $29,500 or you can make an offer.

Vintage Breguet Type XX price update

I was lucky to be able to find some of these watches early when the prices are not so crazy. The prices of vintage watches are on the rise owing to the internet and auction houses. This has made vintage watch collecting a good form of saving. For those who is keen.

Vintage Breguet Type 20

The Vintage Breguet Type XX was commissioned by a famous French military in the 1950s used by the French Air Force, Flight Testing Center and Naval Air Alarm.

The Type 20 had a number of features that apparently were military specifications. The case was relatively large for a military watch at 38mm, with black dial, luminous Arabic numerals and hands, a sweep second center column chronograph hand, and 2 subdials at 3 and 9 o'clock. The subdial at 9 was a small seconds indicator. The chronograph elapsed time subdial at 3 had special markings for 3, 6 and 9 minutes. The bezel rotated, in order to keep track of elapsed time.

Vintage Breguet Type XX

I was going thorough some web sites and was shocked to look at the extent of increased in prices for vintage watches.

On second thought, looking at the increased in prices for vintage 3rd grade brands such as Doxa, Enicar, Titus etc, as a result of the internet, it is not surprising that everything and every brand is "collectible" now.
