Restoration of an old Rolex 1016 Explorer 1 ref 1016 from 1962

I have always love the Rolex Explorer series. This is my first watch purchased in the year 2024 and it is a Rolex Explorer 1 ref 1016 from 1962 and from the original owner. The watch is in very bad shape and it is in need of a service and thorough cleaning as it has dirt and rust marks on its case. It has a mark3 dial. I love restoring vintage watches.

There are dirt and rusts around the case but luckily no serious corrosion

Crystal has been heavily scratched but dial remains original despite losing all the luminous

Mark 3 dial

There are 6 different period dials perhaps produced by different dials suppliers during that time

I have sent it for a thorough service and cleaning. The case has been fully cleaned with ultrasound cleaner and no polishing of case as below:

The lugs are still fat

Numerals are still clearly engraved

This is the final product

I am quite happy with the outcome. The next task is to look for a nicer Rolex 1016 dial in order to bring the watch back to its former glory.
