I have an old steel Rolex watch case with inner dust cover bought several years ago, maybe more than 10-15 years, together with a bunch of spare parts. For the Rolex Prince watch series, besides the Platinum case, the next rare one is the steel case. Many are in solid 9k, 14k, or 18k gold, silver case or bi colour.
This is a very challenging project trying to revive the Rolex Prince watch as I would need to find a Rolex Prince movement and a dial. Most of the vintage Rolex Prince watch comes complete with case and dial. In fact, there are many Rolex Prince doctor's watch being fitted with Gruen movement instead.
Not long ago, I have found a Gruen Doctor's watch fitted with Rolex 300 movement instead of a Gruen movement. I have two options. Keeping the Gruen watch with Rolex movement or do a revival and restoration for both the Gruen and the Rolex.
With the case and movement found, I have decided to put in effprt and start searching for a nice Rolex dial. Finally, I have managed to find a NOS Rolex Dial from overseas. The dial arrived quite quickly.
There will be a need to get a Rolex 300/ Gruen 877 stems as well
I quickly sent my watch to my watchmaker Carson and he has managed to replace the dial and fitted it correctly into the steel Rolex Prince case as below:
It has been an interesting journey as I have finally started to revive a Rolex Prince with the correct movement and also fitted the Gruen Doctor watch with a Gruen movement. With that, I now have two spare Gruen doctor watch cases and hopefully, I can find the Gruen movements to complete another two projects.
This movement is not a complete Rolex movement. Normally, its from a Gruen doctor watch. However, as both Gruen and Rolex Prince watches were from the same manufacturer, often parts are interchangeable.
