In 1956, Rolex conceived of a new variant of Turn-O-Graph to honor the Thunderbirds, a U.S. Air Force squadron devoted to aerial demonstrations. Rolex built this new model (Reference 6609) upon the Datejust (the 36mm Oyster Case), but with an 18k gold case and the solid gold rotating bezel. Rolex offered the new reference of Turn-O-Graph to the Thunderbirds, thus giving it the nickname by which it is best known in the States.
The reference 6609 was discontinued in 1959, and it was replaced with the Reference 1625. The 1625, which ran from 1959 to 1977, was offered in two variants--two-tone steel and yellow and white gold. Unlike the Datejust, the Turn-O-Graph was never offered entirely in steel. In my opinion, the Rolex 6609 is a gentleman’s tool watch as it has the sporty rotating bezel in addition to the Datjust dress watch look.
This is a Rolex Thunderbird 6609 using caliber 1066 from the 1950s. What made this one special is that it’s made of 18k pink gold. I have always love the rose or pink gold watches and what I like about the watch is that it is the In-between model from the Vintage series (bubbleback, Semi Bubbleback and Butterfly movement) to the modern. Need to use two watches to exchange for this !
