Rolex ref 6518 (from 1954) Oysterdate Perpetual Waffle Creamy

The 6518 debuted at Baselworld in 1954. This watch was notable because of its caliber 1030, the first automatic movement made by Rolex that was not based on an Aegler Hunter movement. Most 6518's are just "Oysterdate Perpetuals and some has the The "Rite-Time" brand written.

This is a Rolex Oysterdate Perpetual with a Waffle Creamy Dial ref 6518 which I have just received after trading my hand wind Rolex for it. It is from the 3rd quarter 1954 and is using the Rolex 1010 caliber commonly known as the Butterfly movement. Even though the watch is from 1954, the overall condition is still very good.

Interestingly, this watch was not in my wish list. Mr Wong has called me informing me that there is a watch in very good condition. After I have seen it, I was immediately attracted by its nice overall condition and its lovely waffle or honeycomb dial which has patina and aged nicely.

As per the photo above, you can see that the case has sharp and straight features and the sides of the case is extremely flat and straight, usually there is a slight bulge that makes it look a bit rounded. The fat back case reminds us of the early Rolex Semi bubbleback. Even though the size is 34mm, with the metal bracelet, it doesn’t feel small even with today’s standard.

The vintage Rolex Oysterdate has an interesting roulettes date discs with alternate red and black dates and has an open 6 and 9.

The Rolex Oysterdate Pepetual is similar to the early Rolex Oysterdate with the waffle like dial except that the former is automatic while the latter is handwind
