Spaceman watches from the 1960-70s

In the late sixties Claude Lebet, owner of the Bulle based watch brand Catena asked Le Marquand to create a timepiece inspired by man's conquest of the moon and the astronauts who made it there. Mr. Le Marquand provided him with his first wristwatch design called, what else, the "Spaceman."

The Spaceman was unlike anything seen before and Catena introduced the fleet at the Basel Fair of 1972. The large oval case appeared to be docked on your wrist held by a triple-forked Corfam strap by DuPont. The case also had a coned dome crystal half concealed by a colored metal visor that allowed viewing of the dial to only the wearer. All hands and markers were perfectly seventies orange with models in a variety of colors only possible during that special decade.

These unusual and funky spaceman watches from the 1960-70s. Spaceman Audacieuse watch, designed by Andre Le Marqunad an architect from Neufchâtel.

Rolex ref 5513 submariner

The Rolex 5513 has a long 28 years production and it is an interesting watch to collect.

Submariner 5513 Key Features:
Model: 5513
Years of production: 1962 – 1989
Case size: 40mm
Material: Stainless steel
Bezel: Two-way rotation, black aluminum ring with 60-minute scale
Dial: Black gilt dilt to malt dial to dial with luminous hour markers (gold-plated, matte or shiny)
Luminous paint: radium or tritium
Mirror surface: dome-shaped acrylic
Water resistance: 200 meters/660 feet first followed by 660 feet

The Rolex 5513 has interesting dial changes in different periods, such as Explorer Dial with 369 digital time scales, Rolex Gilt Dial from 1962-66, Maxi Dial from 1966-84, Glossy Dial from 1984-90...

All kinds of changes add playability and collectability, and the market price ranges from 10,000 US dollars to 100,000 US dollars. It really deserves to be the icon of Vintage sports watches.

Two versions of the Rolex 5513. Right is the earlier gilt dial 5513. Left is the Meter first in Malt dial.

Many collectors love the 5513 as there is no date function, and the layout of the dial is symmetrical. In addition to better interpretation by divers, the mirror without a magnifying glass provides better aesthetic consistency.

5513 was deliberately not certified by the COSC Observatory because of the market positioning at the time (obviously this movement has the Observatory certification on other models).

As a result, it is not printed with the words Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified, presenting a clean and simple overall aesthetic.

People often say that acrylic is warmer and more beautiful. Specifically, when the light refracts into the dial, the color temperature is lower, it is yellower, and the light is arc-shaped and not as sharp as the straight line of the crystal mirror. Therefore, players say that the watch with acrylic crystal is very difficult to photograph, but it is super beautiful if it can be photographed clearly.

Most collector will use the two-way bezel rotates, and the acrylic crystal as characteristic of vintage. Rolex 16610 onwards uses a crystal mirror and one-way rotating bezel can be classified as Neo Vintage.

What made the Rolex 5513 iconc is that 007 James Bond James Bond was wearing 5513 in the movie during the actor Roger Moore Roger Moore period.

5513 from 1973's Live and Let Die, can also use the outer ring to rotate into a chainsaw.

The Rolex 5512 certified by the Observatory with a higher market price positioning.

The Rolex 5517 produced in cooperation with the British Ministry of Defence for the use of British troops. It looks similar to the 5513 except that It has a fixed bars on the lugs and the bezel is slightly different from the normal 5513 with full minute markers.

Jan - March 2023 Q1 review

For 2023, I have been trying to be very cautious in fine-tuning my watch collection with a focus on Rolex Doctors watches & Rolex bubbleback as key.

In addition, as part of my efforts to complete my so called "Green collection" project, I have added one Neo Vintage GMT 2 green arrow. In doing so, I have expanded my GMT collection from Rolex 6542, 1675, to 116710LN as well as complete my Green project consisting of the Rolex Milgauss 116400GV, Rolex Green Submariner 11610LV and the GMT2 green arrow 116710LN.

Furthermore, I have tried to convert some of my watches from yellow gold to rose gold.

The new collection insists of the following:
